Internationalisation
and the University
Ondokuz
Mayıs
University recognises internationalisation as a major mean to
improve the quality of education and research through the created
interactions and cooperation leading to innovation. In that sense,
the integration of the university to the European Education and
Research areas, and involvement in cooperative activities with
European Education Institutions are considered crucial.
Moreover, the university recognises the demand of its students for
preparing them for an international career and sees it important
to give students opportunities to become familiar with other
European cultures and educational systems through mobility. The
mobility of students is also recognised as a means for improving
the quality of education.
With these strategic motivations defined, the
Office of International Relations was established in Spring 2001
with the mission of coordinating the activities related to the
internationalisation of the university and improving the
participation of the university in cooperation activities and
raising the reputation of the university in the international
area. The office consists of the advisor for the rector
Prof. Dr. Kerim EDİNSEL
(as the head of the office), three full-time staff
members and five academic members each specialised in different
internationalisation areas. As a coordinator, the office started
by discovering the opportunities of international cooperation by
participating in the research and education programmes.
Participation in
ERASMUS
After the
participation of Turkey to SOCRATES programme in 2002, recognising
the potential opportunities and benefits the programme offers, and
the relevance of those opportunities to University’s motivation in
internationalisation, with the support of the university
administration, the Office of International Relations was
restructured and the ERASMUS unit was established within the
International Relations Office in March 2003. The mission of the
office is assuring the effective participation of the university
in the ERASMUS programme by coordinating the necessary activities
to fulfil the requirements of the programme.
Since its
foundation, the ERASMUS unit carried out promotion activities to
inform the academics about the programme and now, the office works
as a team of
142 ERASMUS / ECTS Coordinators
in all academic units together with the International Relations
Office staff members. The university received the Erasmus
University Charter on 17 May 2004 with the Erasmus ID code TR
SAMSUN01. Since then, the University has had full participation in
Erasmus with its responsibilities and rights defined.
